How far in advance should we pick out and buy bridesmaid dresses?

My wedding is exactly 9 months away, I just ordered my wedding dress this past weekend. It's somewhat of a project to get my bridesmaids all together in one place. When should they start shopping for bridesmaid dresses, and how far in advance should we order?
I've narrowed it down to some selections online, just wondering when to go and start the actual shopping.

You should ask the dress shop that you are planning on going to. show them your choices and let them tell you the lead time for each.

EVERY designer is different. some are made here and will be available quicker. some are made overseas and get shipped via boat etc etc.

btw...that's good advice for all the things for your wedding.. always ask questions!!! they are all experts!!

the dresses i picked were alfred angelo. i ordered them by the end of january. my wedding is august 30th, 2008. they just came in this week.

ps. if you are having a hard time getting your girls together, just pick a date one month away and whoever can come... will come. don't fret about this. in the end it's your decision. it's nice that you want them all to go and try things on. (i did this with some of my girls as well). it was a nice time... i got to see who was happy with what and who was NOT happy with what as well. in the end i picked the dress that i felt suited everyone's needs.
